Safety First: New Helmet Requirement for Moped and Scooter Riders in the Netherlands
As of 2023, helmet use will be required for all moped and scooter riders in the Netherlands, regardless of their age. This requirement is part of a new law that aims to improve road safety in the country and reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities from moped and scooter accidents. Originally the introduction was planned for July 2022.
Under the new law, all moped and scooter riders will be required to wear a helmet that meets certain safety standards, such as those set by the European Union (EU) or the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). These standards ensure that the helmets provides sufficient protection for the head in the event of an accident.
In addition to the helmet requirement, the new law also includes other measures to improve road safety for moped and scooter riders. These measures include a maximum speed limit of 45 km/h (28 mph) for mopeds, a mandatory driving license for moped riders over the age of 16, and stricter penalties for traffic offenses committed by moped and scooter riders.
Overall, the new helmet requirement for moped and scooter riders in the Netherlands is intended to improve road safety and reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities from moped and scooter accidents. Within the moped market, people do appear to be responding well to the speed pedelec helmet for moped users. However, despite the use of the speed pedelec helmet, the market fears that in the near future many moped users will abandon the moped or not purchase a new one. This has an immediate effect on sustainability because no new market is greening as fast as the moped industry. Of all newly registered mopeds in 2021, nearly 40 percent are now electric.
